Does Haritaki Burn Belly Fat? The Weight-Loss Research Is Wilder Than You Think

Haritaki for Weight Loss?

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is everywhere in Ayurvedic wellness circles.

Gut health. Detox. Third Eye. Digestion.

But there's another question people are beginning to ask:

Can Haritaki actually help burn fat?

Scientists have investigated that question—and some of the experiments went much deeper than simply putting animals on a scale.

Researchers Put Haritaki to the Test

In a study involving mice made obese with a high-fat diet, researchers gave the animals an extract of Terminalia chebula fruit.

They reported anti-obesity and lipid-related effects in the Haritaki-treated animals. But what makes the study especially interesting is where researchers looked next.

They examined genes involved in how the body creates and burns fat. PubMed

Haritaki and the “Fat-Burning” Pathways

Researchers reported changes involving several major metabolic pathways.

One was FAS (fatty acid synthase), an enzyme involved in creating fat.

Two others were PPARα and CPT-1, which are involved in fatty-acid metabolism and oxidation.

The researchers reported decreased FAS expression alongside increased PPARα and CPT-1 expression in the experimental model. PubMed

In simple terms?

Scientists saw changes in pathways associated with making fat versus using fatty acids for energy.

That's exactly the kind of result that makes headlines.

But there's a catch.

Does That Mean Haritaki Burns Belly Fat in Humans?

No.

These were mice—not people.

There is currently no strong human clinical evidence demonstrating that ordinary Haritaki capsules specifically target belly fat or cause meaningful weight loss on their own.

And one small human pilot involving a preparation called Gomutra Haritaki, combined with diet control and exercise, actually found that the control group performed better than the treatment group. The researchers concluded that the results demonstrated the importance of diet and exercise. PubMed

That's an important detail you'll rarely see in viral supplement posts.

But Scientists Aren't Finished

The weight question is still being investigated.

A 2026 randomized controlled trial protocol proposes testing Haritaki Vati against placebo for 90 days in 60 overweight adults, with researchers planning to measure BMI, waist-to-hip ratio and other body measurements. The protocol itself notes the lack of rigorous research in this area. JCDR

So we're getting closer to the question people actually want answered:

What happens when humans take Haritaki under controlled conditions?

For now, claims that Haritaki “melts belly fat” go well beyond the evidence.

But the fact that scientists are examining fat metabolism, PPARα, CPT-1, body weight and waist measurements makes this ancient Ayurvedic fruit much harder to ignore.
