Haritaki for Teeth and Oral Health? Researchers Put It to the Test
Share
Why Are Scientists Studying Haritaki for Oral Health?
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is usually associated with Ayurveda and digestive traditions. But there is another surprisingly active area of research: teeth, saliva and oral bacteria.
Researchers have investigated extracts of Haritaki against Streptococcus mutans, a bacterium strongly associated with dental caries. PubMed
What Happened in a Human Trial?
In one randomized controlled trial, researchers tested a 10% Terminalia chebula rinse in 30 participants.
After rinsing, researchers reported a significant reduction in salivary S. mutans counts at both 5 and 60 minutes. They also found that salivary pH remained alkaline for one hour after the rinse. PubMed
Another randomized clinical trial involved 60 children aged 8–12 at high risk for cavities. Both hot and cold aqueous Haritaki extracts produced significantly different S. mutans counts compared with the negative control at the measured intervals. PubMed Central (PMC)
And This Research Goes Back Decades
This isn't an entirely new idea.
A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 1999 investigated aqueous Terminalia chebula extract and found effects on the growth and behavior of S. mutans. Researchers also reported reduced salivary bacterial counts following a 10% extract rinse. PubMed
More recently, laboratory research published in 2021 found antibacterial activity of a Terminalia chebula ethanol extract against S. mutans and investigated possible effects on glucan formation and bacterial genes involved in that process. PubMed
Does This Mean Haritaki Capsules Prevent Cavities?
No. That's an important distinction.
These studies investigated specially prepared Haritaki extracts and mouth rinses. They do not demonstrate that swallowing a Haritaki capsule prevents cavities, treats gum disease or replaces brushing, flossing and professional dental care.
But the research reveals a fascinating side of Terminalia chebula that many people who know Haritaki only as an Ayurvedic botanical may never have heard about.
An ancient fruit associated with traditional wellness practices is also being investigated in modern dental research—and scientists are still exploring what its compounds may be capable of.
