Haritaki for Joint Comfort? A Human Study Had Surprising Results
Share
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic practices, but modern researchers have also started putting this ancient fruit to the test.
One particularly interesting study looked at whether a standardized water extract of Terminalia chebula could influence joint comfort and physical function.
What Did the Study Find?
Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 105 adults between the ages of 35 and 70. Participants were given either a placebo or a standardized Terminalia chebula fruit extract for 84 days. PubMed Central (PMC)
The participants were generally healthy but experienced knee discomfort during physical activity.
After 84 days, the researchers reported improvements in several measures among participants receiving the Haritaki extract, including knee discomfort during activity, overall joint-function scores and performance in a six-minute walking test compared with placebo on reported study measures. Does That Mean Haritaki Treats Joint Problems?
Not so fast.
This study investigated one specific standardized Haritaki extract (AyuFlex®) in a particular group of adults. It does not prove that every Haritaki supplement produces the same effects, nor does it establish Haritaki as a treatment for arthritis or other joint conditions.
But it does show something interesting: Haritaki isn't being discussed only in ancient Ayurvedic texts. Researchers have tested Terminalia chebula in controlled human studies as well.
And that's one reason this centuries-old fruit continues to attract modern scientific attention.
Ancient Tradition, Modern Curiosity
From its long history in Ayurveda to today's laboratory and clinical research, Haritaki remains an unusual meeting point between traditional botanical use and modern scientific investigation.
There is still much researchers don't know—and one clinical trial isn't the final word—but Haritaki's story is clearly far from finished.
